Strange, because everyone said that Apple would release the MB and MBPs on the 12th, but not all of a sudden it shifted to the iMac

I'm surprised we haven't started with those "New PowerBook Next Tuesday" rumors, they were fun.

Does anyone know how big this would be? It would be huge. No beyond huge. Literature is as universally accepted as music. It's used everywhere from text books in schools, to training manuals, to maintenance manuals, to entertainment in the home, to entertainment while you are sitting waiting for the dentist. Imagine subscribing to a magazine and having it downloaded off of iTMS like a podcast.

In short I would sell my first, second, third born sons, and cut off a pinky toe for Apple to release an e-book reader. This is Sony's attempt:

    http://dynamism.com/images/extra/DSCN0862.jpg

No one in the market has done the design right yet. There is this huge market waiting for someone to step up to the plate and get it done right, easy, and elegant. Sound familiar?

But above all please PLEASE PLEASE dont integrate it into the iPod. It would be doing major disservice to the emerging industry.

I cannot agree more. Apple would need to add another product to their line, not replace the actual iPod with something bulkier. Some people enjoy the iPod as a music player/portable HD. Why lose their business by breaking their favorite toy (by making it bigger to accomodate functions they might not care about)?

A few random thoughts on form and function...

I don't have an iPod yet because I don't think I'd enjoy reading a lot of text on any of the actual models. Like any other university student, I have tons of academic books and articles on top of my novels, short stories and such. Since I move and travel a lot, I often have to leave many - or most - of my books behind. With e-books, I could simply bring along a small, light-weight reader and I'd have my whole library with me, easily accessible, 24/7, no matter where I am. That would be beyond cool!!! A gadget integrating music and video too would be awesome, but adding video means an LCD, which means much shorter battery life, so there is a trade-off there: the do-it-all gadget that I am longing for just doesn't seem to be here yet.

Of course, you can read e-books on a laptop, but as has already been mentioned in this thread, reading from your laptop on the bus isn't enjoyable. It can be done, but few bother. I've had a laptop for over four years and I can't say I carried it around all that much. I need something smaller... but that can grow bigger when need be!!! I'll try to explain myself... When listening to music, you don't need a big screen and you don't want to lump around a big device for no reason. When watching video, a bigger screen is a good thing. However, an LCD isn't good for battery life and an e-ink screen isn't good for video, so how about having one of each on the same device? Or have two devices that integrate together flawlessly while addressing different needs?

For example, think iPod video with an LCD taking the whole "face" of the iPod. The device has a hard drive so you can carry a lot of stuff with you at all times. Then fold it open and you'll find an e-ink screen. The e-ink screen could be roughly twice as big as the LCD if it takes all of the surface inside, so you wouldn't be reading on a tiny screen. Maybe the e-ink screen could have its own flash memory, so the device could load the documents that you want to read on there. You'd need to access the hard drive only when you want to read/listen to/watch something that isn't on the flash drive, so I assume it would help the battery life a lot. (Actually, I'm starting to think that the flash memory/hard drive combo could be cool whatever screen the iPod uses, but I'm getting off-topic.) Or maybe the screen could be something you unroll from a tube. Anyways, I think that you could have your library on one device (that has a hard drive), yet read your stuff on another one (which has a much better battery life), or on another part of the same device. It poses challenges, obviously, as you don't want to waste time transfering stuff all the time, but I think it might be the closest we can get to having our cake and eating it too.

Great reviews on it from another website. Don't know it at the moment, have to do a deeper google search to find it.

I was about to buy it but it went out of stock and whenever it gets back in stock I won't have the money. It makes me plan angry.

At the moment I still don't have this chair but I will sooner or later.

Thanks. I read some reviews and most were good but I also read about flaking so that has me a little worried.

I have a similar chair that I got from Tesco in the UK, and its really comfortable and sturdy.

Thanks. I think I will go and order it. $200 sounds good to me.

    So?

My dad got me an original iPad for my birthday at BB and went to return it last Monday and told them he was gonna get the new one at an Apple Store so they went in the back and said they have a few iPad 2s and got a 32gb AT&T one. Was yesterday supposed to be the first day BB was selling the 2?

The current 5MP camera on the iPhone is fantastic for such a small sensor. video recording at 720p is pretty crappy IMO. They need a better quality lens and Sony offers that opportunity.

The ios iPod app is an abomination. Even with my moderately sized(about 3000 songs, most are just vocab flash cards) the thing chokes on my 3gs and even a bit on 1g iPad. It takes seconds, yes SECONDS to respond to input, not to mention all the crashing. Even if they could make a 128gb iPod touch, I would shudder to think at how insanely slow the iPod app would be if you loaded that puppy up with music.

In my case it's adding ONE podcast to listen too before bed, then waiting forever as it sits there "updating" the library. I can sync and start to listen to it in the same time on my classic.

It's the fourth most behind Mandarin, English, and Hindi.

    http://www.krysstal.com/spoken.html

(just in case you were wondering)
Well there you go, was wondering about Chinese (mainly Mandarin), didn't think of Hindi. So English is only the 2nd most spoken language, huh. Add Spanish and Portuguese, and it would be 2nd! Well OK, not how it works...
So Mandarin, English, Spanish and possibly Hindi dictionaries should be hot sellers on an eBookPod then.

Been lurking for years (entertaining for sure), but I had to register because you clowns are missing the obvious on this one.

It is the infamous Mac iTablet (iPhone'esque only bigger), and the "in the air" part is... the keyboard.

It's a floating holographic projection type thing that you type on, therefore freeing up all screen real estate and no smudges.

Interesting point, although what you're not factoring in is that the resale value of CS5 is substantial whereas the resale value of the subscription model is ZERO :D

Nor the fact that the only part of that 8000 up-front cost you save is the 1700 cost of the Adobe software. 21% saving is better than nothing, but you would do better to get your business modelling and recruitment right...

Sounds like we are getting an iPod Pro if that is at all possible. Personally I think putting too much functionality in to an item like the iPod is a bad idea, I use my iPod Video for music and sometimes a movie or TV episode.

The beauty of the iPod is its simplicity, elegance and ease of use once you start stuffing around with a winning formula then it's doomed to fail.

With that said if an iPod is released with a bigger LCD or OLED screen and a PDA type function I probably would buy it :D

So, the way it is now, you buy Photoshop for around $650 and after 18 months you can upgrade for $190. Total: $840 for 36 months, plus you still have your software to use for as long as you want if you choose not to upgrade anymore...

So, $35 x 36 months = $1260 and after the 36 months finnish, you have nothing...

I don't see a big advantage here, unless you only use photoshop in a few projects a year... I don't know anyone who does that, tho...

The big advantage here isn't for you. ;)

Austrian Store is down as well.

Take note, that Austria is NOT among those countries (US, UK, Germany,...) who are supposed to get iPad's on April 3rd.

    That's quiet a good sign isn't it?

Just because some are successful does not mean all can be. There is plenty of racism still around in most countries, and yes it does effect the less off more than those that are well off.
Because Blacks are not all the same. You cant lump people of one race all in one group and expect them to all to have the same results. There is a history in the US of racism that still effects many black Americans. Many black Americans can't afford to go to college for example. Poverty is a vicious cycle that preys on its self.

Because some are successful does not mean all can be? That's crap. I'm not lumping them into one group, i'm saying their race has a disproportionate amount of poverty compared to others. And we're not even talking about the US, this thread is about Britain. Many blacks in Britain are immigrants, unlike in the US. So they have no history of anything there.

Hackers rank up there with drug dealers as the scum of the earth. Pathetic, cocky wastes of human life. And no - there's no way you can convince me otherwise and I know I'm not in the minority on this one.

Side Note: Of course I'm talking about the ones who release their stuff into the wild and don't just notify the software company about the problem and keep it to themselves (those are good people and should be commended - it's the other ones that are a waste of flesh)

I agree....but wouldn't it be better to say, malicious hackers? I think that most hackers are good people and just like to tinker with things. Of course there's always going to be some bad apples.

I sympathise with lots of your points, but this one doesn't necessarily stand up.

Cost of an external hard disk to back up my entire music library (if I had bought it all from iTunes): Approx 40

Cost of shelving to hold all my CD's: Approx 200

I understand what you are saying and already realized that, like I said, I would love for iTunes to be my one stop shop for music, because it's more convenient. But their pricing is off due to such low overhead, that I shouldn't be able to buy physical media more cheaply.

My argument is has more to do with them not keeping accounts that you can access your purchased stuff from. It is more of the fact that I don't want to back up stuff 2 or 3 times over because if it is lost I wouldn't be able to get it again. Hard drives do fail quite a bit. I know there are circumstance of apple letting people download all their stuff once, but it should be something they would offer anyway.

Most of my original post would pertain to buying something like the Beatles Box set on iTunes. I could buy it on iTunes for $150 in digital format or go to Amazon get the real box set for $130 encode it in better quality if I desired and either throw the box set away, give it away or sell it for lets say $80, if I didn't want it taking up space. So it cost me $50, and I have the same exact thing I would have gotten on iTunes for about one third the cost (depending on what I sold it for). If you still think that buying that set on iTunes is the better value then that's fine. To me it just doesn't compare.

I didn't really mean to write a rant opposed to trying to make people realize that iTunes is not a good deal in many cases and they should not be charging what they do, but people are so blinded, it makes me wonder.

Don't get me wrong, on few occasions I do buy music on iTunes but I still think it is a ripoff because it is an all digital purchase.

Couldn't all Facebook apps also be approved by default, and only be given access to a user's personal information by explicit consent of that user?

Like the world has done such a bang up job of being trustworthy, lol. Apple has to do what they believe they have to do to survive and thrive. They haven't done it by the conventional/popular ways of thinking. I never said that Apple is perfect or that their approval process is just right. But it is what it is. People aren't all trustworthy, that's probably a reason why they clamp down (whether right or wrong in certain instances) on app approval.

While I'm no fan of Apple's "random" app approval, I am glad that it does have some standards. The last thing I want is for the app store to be overrun by malware and virus coded apps, not stop pop-ups, system grossing apps, and (what is 97% of the internet) porn apps. Sure these can be found in safari, but i don't want to have to sift through all that when I'm just trying to find a game or a navigation app.

But there are larger venues available, so it is certainly possible to limit the number of attendees by choosing a venue that is too small.
There are far greater costs/concessions in utilizing those larger venues.

Moscone Center is the best and largest facility in the SF Bay Area for Apple's needs. It's not like Apple is going to rent out the Oakland Coliseum and spread out a thousand chairs and tables on the football field.

Going out of town increases the costs enormously: moving equipment and people. Airline flights, per diem meals, hotel rooms, taxis, rental cars, etc. Forgot a couple of boxes of marketing collateral? Moscone Center: have someone drive it up 280. Elsewhere: buy full-fare airline ticket for employee.

What does it cost Apple to send an engineer to Moscone Center? Employee gets to expense lunch, write off transportation (heck, half of these engineers probably live in SF - they can just take BART or Muni to the event). Let's say $30 a day.

What does it cost to send an engineer to the L.A. Convention Center or Vegas? Long-term parking at airport, airline flight, $200 hotel, arbitrary $75 per diem meals, rental car/taxi, etc. Could easily end up at $400 per day per person.
